And, keep in mind, older homes generally do not have pressure-treated lumber that stands up to water.

Also, even small pools of water round out an environment that sustains creatures such as mice, snakes and a wide range of bugs. By contrast, a dry basement acts as a deterrent to unwelcome visitors.
